Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb Review

I did not anticipate reviewing another hand-held heating tool on this platform after my failed experience with the Revlon Pro Collection Salon One-Step Hair Dryer & Styler which I still possess, regrettably (I have made attempts to sell it; however, no potential buyers. At this point, I am inclined to give this item a new dwelling at no cost).  

So, what brings me to today’s post? Well, as some of you may or may not know, January 14, 2023, I shaved my head; what warranted it has been made public on this forum. However, since the big chop, my hair has grown at a moderate pace under protective styling, which has been a combination of cornrows and wigs to preserve healthy hair and retain its length. 

During this hair reset, I adjusted my hair care routine to embody the principle, “less is more” with the intent to streamline my regime to minimize time spent on styling my hair. How I intended to approach this was to incorporate, yet again, another heating tool to achieve a smoother and more uniformed finish for cornrows as a protective style. For this reason, I obtained what I thought was a hair blow dryer comb – please read item description before making any purchase, do not emulate me.  

Despite everything, my misstep turned out to be an advantage in disguise which has led me to review the Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb. 

In today’s post, I am going to share with you: what the Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb is, what was included in the package, key features, and my direct encounter with the device itself. 

What is a Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb?

The Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb is a 2-in-1 heating tool that functions as a flat iron and comb. The styling tool is designed to create a straight, smooth, sleek look, and add volume and shine; while minimizing the risk of split ends and heat damage with the support of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) technology which is efficient and safe (explained later in the post).

To prepare the hair for straightening only two products were required on clean, dry, sectioned hair; a leave-in conditioner and a heat protectant.

Review & Hindsight Reflection

Review:  The Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb surpassed my expectation; there is nothing about the tool that I would alter; it is inexpensive, sophisticatedly designed, and fulfilled its purpose.

The straightening comb operated as intended; the rapid heating time allowed the straightener to reach its desired temperature to be ready to use in next to no time. The 3D ceramic teeth design was also a nice touch to the tool to get close to the scalp to achieve a relatively smooth, straight finish from root to tip. Not to mention, the anti-scald design enhanced the overall experience of the heating tool as it prevents burns and protects the skin to ensure safe, carefree styling. 

In the end, I am sure you would like to know if I experienced heat damage using the Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb; but first, it is important to briefly detail why the PTC heating technology is safe and how it works and impacts the hair. 

As mentioned earlier, PTC technology is a heating element that is efficient (which I already alluded to with its fast-heating time) and safe.  

PTC is known for its self-regulating properties; it automatically adjusts its heat output to maintain a consistent temperature (its resistance increases simultaneously with the temperature; as the heating element  warms up, its resistance increases, decreasing the current flow and limiting the heat output) and prevents overheating and/or the risk of fire as it is designed to limit excessive current in a circuit when it reaches its operating temperature.

As it applies to the hair, the PTC self-regulating properties help minimize heat damage as it produces constant, stable heating, avoiding damage to the hair caused by thermal shock. Different from traditional heating elements, the PTC technology enables even heat distribution throughout the hair strands, preventing adverse effects that impact the hair’s health and appearance.

So, did I experience heat damage? I will let you be the judge of that. 

Hindsight Reflection:  With hindsight, to optimize my result with the Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb I would have followed up my wash with blow-dried, stretched hair; used a heat protectant that was compatible with my hair (The CHI 44 Iron Guard Spray, had a sticky residue and made my hair feel stiff and dry) and kept the heat on one temperature setting to achieve a silk press-like finish.

Nevertheless, I don’t think I experienced heat damage, and if I did it was probably minimal; but, overall the straightening comb functioned well in transforming the physical texture of my hair; it created a straight and smooth appearance with a lot of movement *stiff where?*, but most importantly it accelerated the process of braiding cornrows as a protective style, which was the goal. The only drawback I had with the Tymo Ring Hair Straightening Comb was thoroughly cleaning the debris and loose hair stuck between the teeth of the device. However, there are methods that can be found online to help remove loose hair, dust, and debris from the tight spaces of the straightening comb.

I am still in pursuit of a blow dryer. I did purchase the Conair Infiniti Pro 1875 Watt 3-in-1 Ceramic Styler/Hair Dryer, but I hate it. I currently have my eyes on the Tymo Airhype Lite Silver 3 Nozzles / Tymo Airhype Hair Dryer; however, I cannot commit to splurging that much for a heating tool. Then again, I just might.
