It is a new year, and I figured, ‘why not share an updated wash day routine?’ Not a whole lot has changed since my last post in 2019. However, my priority this year is to reclaim my time. Wash days for me can be a time-consuming process and, frankly, time no longer permits that fraction of my life.
Achieving healthy hair is and will always be a priority in my hair care regimen. I now have an understanding of my hair and what she requires, as she seems to constantly exclaim “less is more! And, leave me alone!” The minimalist approach is unquestionably more effective; more can be accomplished with less which is essential for me where time allocation is concerned.
my UPDATED WASH DAY ROUTINE
Nowadays my wash days typically occur on a monthly basis, but there are days when I wash my hair two – three weeks in, in its protective style (cornrows), only when necessary.
Take Down
Firstly, my wash days start with my hair in its protective style, cornrows, (which I have been loving lately) as it gives my hands a break from my hair. After keeping my hair in its current state for about a month, I will take down my cornrows and detangle to remove shed hair that has accumulated over time.
Shampoo
Next, I shampoo my hair using any one of the following shampoos: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration, African Black Soap Hair Growth, Melanin African Black Soap Reviving or Mane ‘n Tail Gentle Clarifying shampoo to cleanse and clarify my scalp from scalp buildup, and allowing the shampoo to run its course through the strands of my hair when rinsing.
Deep Condition & Detangle
After shampooing, I skip the conditioner process and follow-up with a deep conditioner, alternating between Camille Rose Algae Renew and Rosemary & Peppermint Herbal deep conditioner for nourishment, increased moisture, hair elasticity and manageability. I then proceed to divide my hair in sections to detangle.
Seal (Leave-in Conditioner/Cream/Oil)
Lastly, I seal using the LCO (leave-in conditioner, cream, and oil) method for maximum hydration. For my leave-in, I use the Multi-Use Softening Leave In Conditioner, followed by Camille Rose Naturals Curlaide Moisture Butter, and olive oil to seal in all the moisture, plaiting each section for maximum stretch. I also take it a step further by locking all the moisture in with Blue Magic Organics Castor Oil.
