I have returned with another post, this time I am taking it back with this product; one that you may or may not be familiar with, and that is the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. If you are not familiar with Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, it is calcium bentonite; an ancient clay that has been used for many years as a remedy to treat and or improve a variety of things such as inflammation, body digestion and detoxification; additionally, it cleans, heals and protects the skin for a youthful glow.
My experience with the bentonite clay has always been skin care (applied as a facial mask) due to its effectiveness to draw out impurities from the skin; the negative charge ions (the clay) attracts to positive charge ions (toxins — dead skin cells, oil, dirt and bacteria) to deeply cleanse, removing the gunk on the skin; in turn, promoting a smooth and radiant appearance.
Much like the clay being used as a facial mask; some people use it as a hair mask, and three months ago I decided to introduce the clay to my natural hair and share my thoughts on it as a potential hair product.
But first, before that, I am going to outline a few benefit claims made about the clay as a hair mask and how it is used and applied to the hair.
Benefit Claims

• Adds shine and softens hair
• Defines curls

How to use / Directions:
using a non-metal bowl and utensil, mix clay with equal parts of ACV; stir the mixture to a smooth paste consistency, adding more liquid or clay as needed — measurement varies on hair length and density.
Application:
1. Simply, section and damp hair using a spray bottle with water; apply mixture onto the scalp and distribute clay to the rest of the hair, coating each hair strand.
2. Next, leave the mask on for 30 minutes or until it is completely dry. Then, rinse. *Optional* cleanse with shampoo and follow-up with conditioner.
Initial impression
This was my first time using the clay on my hair and it was an absolute mess; they say you should use this treatment once a week or whenever your scalp and hair requires a deep cleanse, but this will be a once every three months type of application for me.
But in all seriousness, aside from the state of disarray the clay application left my bathroom and I in, I was pleasantly surprised with how well my scalp and hair responded to the mask.
Firstly, distributing the mixture and raking it throughout my hair allowed me to detangle with ease; it enhanced my curl definition and stretched out / elongated my hair. I left the mixture on for approximately 45 minutes before rinsing it out. I did not follow up with shampoo; the clay acted as a clarifying and detoxifying agent, leaving my scalp and hair completely clean.
Some of the benefit claims held true; the clay mask purified my hair and scalp, gently removing buildup without drying and stripping it; my hair was noticeably conditioned and moisturized with an added sheen, and improved the appearance and feel of my hair.
Personally, I did not see the need to follow-up with a rinse-out conditioner but proceeded with a deep conditioner to strengthen and to provide intensive nourishment to my hair; increasing moisture, elasticity, and manageability. Then, I followed up with the rest of my hair care routine.
In the end, I can’t confirm how true the other claims are as this was my initial experience with the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay as a hair mask on my natural hair, but the changes I noticed in my hair while using the mask were positive enough for me to continue to incorporate it in my hair regimen, at least once every three months.
